Essex women

A collaborative project with Emma Mills, and Anna Sexton, questioning and exploring the terms “Essex Girl” and “Essex Women”  through time using archives and contemporary photographs. The idea started with a make shift studio set up in Southend High Street where interviews and photographs were collected of women walking by. Each artist played with the resulting photographs, and texts, mixed together with old Essex studio photographs and books on women, to produce separate bodies of work shown in an exhibition at Paul Robinson, in Westcliff On Sea. The aim for each piece was to work in conversation with those they were hung with.

This body of work has also been included in the exhibition “This Is What A Essex girl Looks Like” which has been on show at the Beecroft Gallery in Southend-on-Sea, since March 2020.

Laurence’s images are Anthotypes, an organic printing technique, involving photographic positives exposed in the sun onto paper coated with fresh vegetable or fruit juices, such as spinach, beetroot, raspberry and even wine, producing vibrant photographic portraits.
